A Friendly Reminder

The birthday girl post-chocolate covered pretzel sporting her handmade party hat and I AM 2 shirt
More fun to follow later this week, when I explain in further detail the downward spiral I quickly fell as I do every year as I succumb to my own need to outdo myself with party planning.

I plan to send myself this email around the first of December 2012, when those pangs of decorating start to hit for Maeve's third birthday party.

Dearest Jackie 2013,

Hello love!
Here I am, typing on Wednesday, still in recovery from the overkill that was Maeve's Second Birthday party this past Sunday. As the streamers still hang and the cupcakes are slowly being devoured,  I just wanted to offer you a friendly reminder:

You are not Martha Stewart
even though Pinterest gives you the confidence boost to make you think you are.

It's okay.
Maeve and Moira will not be scarred if you lessen up on the party planning crap.  Your friends and family will still love you even if there is a lack of homemade *gasp* lemon squares and only limited decorations. You can actually enjoy the time before the big day, with cuddles and time playing with the girls.

Enjoy your time, don't fret over it.

Who the hell am I kidding?

Good luck in 2013, biatch!
This party rocked and you know it!
You're going to need a lot of luck to out-do yourself for 2013, so I assume you've been pinning and researching! You get an extra day this year since it's a leap year, so no excuses.

Enjoying the after glow,
Jackie 2012

Just for the record, I do not think myself Martha, Kate Landers or any of those chicks who plan the out of this world birthday parties on Lifetime or Bravo.
I'm just a stay at home mom with too much time on my hands...at least that's what Bryan tells me.

Love links is now "Yeah, Write!"

  2. Oh, that damn Pinterest. It is both a joy and a devil, no? It makes me think I can achieve things I clearly cannot. But you can! And that's an adorable picture. :)

  4. Hahaha! Classic. btw... if the Mayan's are correct, you won't have to worry about outdoing yourself next year. So there's that.

  5. My boys birthdays are five days apart (okay...plus 3 years too). Their birthday week has been completely and totally hectic their whole entire lives. Now that they're older...I'm looking forward to relaxing.

Except for that small detail of having a 16 year old. Probably means a trip to the DMV on his bday, huh? Bet there's an awesome craft idea for that on Pinterest!

  7. OH PINTEREST..... the most awesome deliverer of all things we think we just might be able to make but when it comes time to make them they are NEVER as easy as they seem. I love a good themed birthday party too. Lets not kid ourselves planning the birthday parties, picking the theme and showing off is so much fun, but oh so exhausting!!! Loved the letter! -LV

  8. Well I have to say I'm delighted that I've never found Pinterest! Sounds delicious and dangerous at the same time...And hey. If it makes you happy to throw a kick-ass birthday for your little girl, knock yourself out. But remember--there's a LOT o'birthdays coming down the pike, so you might want to save some of that decorating mojo for when she's a little older (and will remember the fabulousness!)

I can offer no help--I am just as addicted to planning a good kiddo b-day party!

  12. So funny, maybe I should start writing letters to myself so I finally get a real birthday party going for my tot, I kept it quite simple so far. But the kid is getting older and I'm sure he'll remember.

    P.S. Congrats for rockin' it!

  14. I feel like this every year too. And every birthday hubby starts to get mad and asks what I've been buying. But he won't notice, right?

  15. Oh my word, this is so true and funny! You are a woman after my own heart. I am so lucky Pinterest was not around when my girls were itty bitty. I would have needed an intervention.

As it was, my oldest is 13 and I have upped the ante every year. For a unicorns and dragons party (I think that was a 7th birthday) I hand painted a dragon on a king size bed sheet and made a PVC pipe frame for it to hang on; all so the kids could be dragon slayers.

Yeah, I kept leaving myself less and less room to top myself.
    But here is the thing.

Once they hit 12, that kind of creative fun is kinda over. Now it is just boy/girl parties with pizza and them wanting to be left alone or kids renting out halls and DJ's to have dances (have avoided this).

I was queen of the kiddie party and I'm sad it's almost over. BUT, I am glad I'm no longer up until 2AM ironing group photos on t-shirts so that each guest of the slumber party can take one home in the morning. There is a bright side to everything!

  16. I think I need to write myself one of these letters. We scaled way back on year 2 as year one was a blow out, I think more for us than them! This was great and yes Pinterest is the devil in a very pretty disguise.
